New Zealand alt-pop aficionados Yumi Zouma reveal “Astral Projection”, the fifth track taken from their fourth album ‘Present Tense’, which was released 18th of March via Polyvinyl Records (Alvvays, Hazel English, Julia Jacklin).
Yumi Zouma are Josh Burgess (vocals, guitar), Charlie Ryder (guitar, bass, keys), Christie Simpson (vocals, keys), Olivia Campion (drums).
Latest single was mixed by Kenny Gilmore (Ariel Pink, Weyes Blood, Yves Tumor) and detailing their newest single, the band explained:
“‘Astral Projection’ is about leaning into bad feelings and the mixed results it brings. Learning to sit with the reality of a relationship not working out as you hoped. Looking towards the future and knowing there will be others, there will be better times, but sitting in the present moment, trying to make peace with that. “Hold me in your arms / I know this wouldn’t last / I know I shouldn’t feel safe, but I do””.
Their fourth album "Present Tense” will be Yumi Zouma’s offering to a tenuous future. The album follows 2020’s acclaimed “Truth or Consequences”. It evolved via remote and in-person sessions in Wellington, Florence, New York, Los Angeles and London. The sound broadened by pedal steel, pianos, saxophones, woodwinds, and strings played by friends around the globe.
“This is our fourth album, so we wanted to pivot slightly, create more extreme versions of songs,” Ryder says. “Working with other artists helped with that and took us far outside of our normal comfort zone.”
